Congratulations to 7th for winning the Sheaf District Annual Splash Competition at Graves Swimming Pool. Three events, including Water Polo, which some Scouts all got talented spotted at.
Scouts learnt about African Drumming on Wednesday. We played a mixture of Group and Team work sets and by the end everyone was playing in harmony. Scouts were set a challenge to play a rhythm together, for 60 seconds. Cobras came out on top with an excellent display of team work.
7th attended the Remembrance Day parade in Dronfield Town Centre on Sunday. Excellent turn of both Scouts and locals to remember those who have given their lives in armed conflict. Service was well attended with a few extra wreaths presented this year.
Camp at Whitley Woods, Ringinglow, Sheffield - we went Geocaching, made Thai Stir Fry ( love the fish sauce) and had a circus skills session with Mickey Bimble.
Dark nights are drawing in so we had good weather but frosty starts.
Well done everyone this morning who helped at the Lea Brook Valley Festival. We collected 13 bags of rubbish from the valley area. This all helps towards the local environment !
Hello Yes we are setting dates already for next Summers Camp w/c 30th July. Scouts will decide next term where - hot contenders are Devon and North Wales:
Or
After an excellent camp it was good to be home. Scout Leader very broken at the end and crawled into bed for an afternoon nap.
Below photo is Rosie the Cat who insisted on being in the way at every opportunity while trying to do washing ( 6 loads) and putting kit away ....but she is very cute ( and knows it)
7th operate a strict tidy tent policy - this photo demonstrates this. Not really sure who decided that everything needs to come out of bags and find a pitch before we had finished clearing the mess tent out but that exactly what happened. Scout Leader implemented a new policy of "no odd socks go back to Scout Hut" which didn't seem to make a slight bit of difference as I have serval at home ...
Towards the end of camp it all goes slightly weird. Tiredness, Adrenaline starting to release and looking forward to going but sad to go kicks in. We all chipped in re clear up. Billy decided we needed some karma in the camp. Girls as usual providing the muscle.
Closing ceremony was an improvement on opening. Massive firework display at the end and a parade of all the site services required to enable Peak to happen including Retail, Safety, Cleaning etc
Lovely day today. We were going to air the tents but having walked into one and seen the contents of everyone's rucksack everywhere I decided not to inflict that on our Guiding neighbours. So after various activities this AM including Caving, Climbing, Swimming and Shooting we hit the bar. Mocktails all round and science exhibition.
Light breakfast this morning - pancakes, fruit, cream and syrup. Sun came in, out, in and out - neon disco tonight - hopefully some banging tunes and time to party. Happy Camping
Parents Day - lots turned and fresh kit exchanged. Girls team collected they medal after winning the sub camp Netball ! Camp is much quieter now all the parents have gone and it's back to cricket and chilling
With stylish moustaches and waist coats we looked more like a Les Mis production than Oliver but we currently looked the coolest. Still raining a bit and everyone's a damp but we just get on with it. Excellent tea - burgers and hot dogs with Fake Black Forest Gateaux.
Well we won the Sub Camp Netball and Wheel Chair Basket Ball - Camp final later in the week. Not really sure what's going on here but apparently it was fun
But of a wet day and evening. But doesn't stop a bit of cricket. Tonight's tea was Spag Bol ( very nice ) and Ginger Sponge and Custard. Tea was wrapped up with an After Eight. Mr Grills ( never can spell his name) appeared briefly but disappeared when the rain arrived.
Congratulations to Matt and Vicki re Chief Scout Gold Award ...again
First tea a success - Sweet and Sour and Chocolate Cake. Soon off to the opening ceremony and Peak has officially started.
We have made friends with the Norwegian Scouts next door and Scottish Girl Guides behind us. Hopefully we might get some sleep !
The marquee is up - well it went up and down a few times after several disagreements were poles and stitching should be. Good news is we are not a massive walk from the toilets and away from the massive sound system we heard from the stage. Thanks to everyone who helped tonight.
As part of our link with 2nd Mzuzu Scouts, Matt is collecting £1 from each Scout so we can send badges, neckers and a few gifts nearly 8,500 Kilometres. Please give generously...
7th are off to ShAFF - the UK's leading Adventure Film Festival. Nearly the whole Troop are going, so if you are not yet aboard then come on and join the ShAFF train from Dronfield ......
We are currently undertaking our Survival Badge .. here's what we have to do to complete it ...
Show that you know:
basic knife or multi-tool skills, including safety and sharpening
first aid treatment you may need to use while on a survival event, considering you may have limited resources available
how to construct different kinds of shelter
how to build a fire and use basic lighting techniques. You should not use man-made materials such as paper or firelighters.
the various burning qualities of different woods
how to maintain hygiene in a survival situation
the correct use of international distress signals, using a whistle, torch, mirror or markers
some basic actions to take while waiting rescue that will both keep you (and your group) safe and will assist your rescuers in locating you.
Put together a personal survival kit. With a group of at least three Scouts, take part in a survival exercise. It should last about 24 hours and the group should:
construct a shelter of natural or salvaged materials and sleep in it
prepare a meal using raw ingredients that could have been found or caught
cook all meals over an open fire
cook without utensils, although you may use a knife.
Spring camp has been announced - 15th to 17th May. This will be a traditional run camp held at Silverwood Campsite near Barnsley. If you fancy Bivouacking under the stars then some and join us.......
This years Chilli Challenge certainly lived up to its name as you can see from the attached photo. After a night hike in the snow what better way to relax by sleeping in tents in the snow.
